BETWEEN TRADITION AND FREEDOM
We are proud to present the very first live album by Mourad Benhammou & His Soulful Drums, recorded on February 8, 2024, at the Auditorium of the Institut Français de Tunis, and produced by the young Tunisian jazz label Jazzit Records.
Captivating, Silk & Soul captures the group’s energy and virtuosity, offering an immersive musical experience where each instrument breathes and converses in the pure tradition of live jazz.
The album, Silk & Soul – Live in Tunis, is now available on all digital platforms and in vinyl edition.
“I wanted to find a different sound, an orchestral texture that allows the music to breathe in a new way.” — Mourad Benhammou
THE SPIRIT OF THE PROJECT.
After two decades leading his Jazzworkers Quintet, Mourad Benhammou founded The Soulful Drums in 2020.
The quintet brings together a lineup of rare instrumental originality: César Pastre on organ, Nicholas Thomas on vibraphone, Yoan Fernandez on guitar, David Sauzay on tenor saxophone, and Mourad Benhammou on drums.
This unique combination gives the music a distinctive orchestral color — warm, rich, and luminous — creating a sound that is both original and deeply inspiring.
The group explores a repertoire where hard bop, jazz, and boogaloo meet, paying tribute to the great masters of organ and groove: Brother Jack McDuff, Les McCann, Harold Ousley, and their fellow musicians of the era, including a young George Benson on the legendary Shadow Dancers.
Through pieces such as Haitian Lady, Rock a Bye, Scream, Blues & Tonic, Soul Woman, Greasy Drums, and My Three Sons, the quintet celebrates a living, embodied jazz — where the heartbeat of the music meets that of the audience.
